HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY THE 30TH

Today we reviewed how to properly fill out a Scientific Speculation Worksheet. It needs to have enough specific detail for someone to use it and redo the experiment on their own. The materials list needs to be complete and the Procedure needs step by step instructions. This should help with future write ups. We had good discussion on echolocation and why sound travels better in the water than in air. Ask your child to explain it to you. It would be a good test question.
Whenever the students read, they should always take notes on vocabulary. Some had words missing which I mentioned in the notebooks. We read p29 in class. Please make sure you have the vocabulary word Herd in your notes.
LEVEL A Read and take notes p29-32. Research Echolocation listing different animals that use it. Write 1/2 -1 typed page paper DUE TUES OCT 4.
LEVEL B Do Level A work, plus write paragraph comparing/contrasting Dolphins and Porpoises, due Friday the 30th. Use the internet for research but avoid Wikipidia.

HOMEWORK FOR TUES THE 20TH

My apologies: the C in ACE basin is for the Combahee River not Colleton River. Our class was very distracted today with pencils and sharpeners. Let's refocus! All enjoyed the experiment.
Study for our Lesson 1 Test, make sure you understand the vocabulary.
Make your clay figure for the Ocean Box, it must be a deep sea creature. Take a picture of it and email it to me, or bring it in a small Tupperware container to class Tues. DO NOT BRING YOUR OCEAN BOX.
Complete the Scientific Speculation Worksheet from the experiment we did in class. This should only take 5-10 min.
Have your completed Lapbooks to turn in on Tuesday. You should have the following for Lesson 1:
Title page
Level A 4 pictures of deep sea creatures with labels, name and one fact, Level B should have 6
Drawing of the Continental Shelf p 12 showing where the sunlight zones would be (p13). Level B should reproduce the picture from the seasky.org website and include the scientific names of sunlight zones.
Have a great weekend. Our movie outing will be next Friday the 23rd if it shows at the Plaza.

HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY THE 16TH

Our Try This Experiment didn't work, but I will bring a bigger balloon on Friday and try again.
We will do Lesson 1 Experiment in class on Friday. I apologize if you went through the expense of purchasing items for at home. Please let me know if you can share them with us in class on Friday.
Some students drew the Continental Shelf picture without labels, please complete that by Friday, including a title for the drawing at the top of the page.

LEVEL A
You should finish covering or painting your ocean box blue by this Friday.
Complete the crossword puzzle as a vocabulary review for our end of lesson test. Glue your pictures in your lapbook and neatly label type of animal and other information you have about it such as depth where found.
We have a great example of an ESTUARY near Beaufort, (ACE Basin). Write or type a paragraph 6-8 sentences defining estuary, ACE, and the habitat or type of animals found there.

LEVEL B
Check the last blog for research already assigned. Prepare your Ocean Box if you're going to make the clay animals. Complete the crossword puzzle, make sure your lapbook has your deep sea creatures 4-6, labelled, as well as the completed continental shelf picture labelled with sunlight zones, the scientific names, and depths either in meters or feet.

HOMEWORK FOR TUES THE 13TH

Please read through this long blog and call me if you have any questions.
To accomodate the different grades in my class, I want to offer 2 levels of work. Level A will follow the book with minimal outside research (ie internet). Tests will be simpler with matching and multiple choice.
Level B will require researching information on topics I will list, writing summaries and papers, adding more detailed drawings to the lapbook. Tests will cover the same material, but with more detailed questions, fill in the blank and short answers. I may give extra labs to do at home and ask for more in depth write-ups.
In the next week, choose what level you want your child to be. You can move up from A to B later in the year (after a quarter or semester), but if you choose the harder level now, you need to stay there for the rest of the year.

Some kids read the whole lesson already so you're ahead! Good for you.
Level A
Read and take notes p 8-15 in your notebook. Start a new line for each vocab word. DO NOT DO Try This p 15. We will do it in class.
In your Lapbook: copy the drawing of the continental shelf p 12 and show where the sunlight zones p 13 would be. Some students found pictures of fish, sharks, and clams. Please research 3-5 Oceanic Trench Animals, a picture and a name. Use seasky.org website below. It's awesome! or Google oceanic trench animals. Next week you will glue or tape these in your lapbook. Even if you don't do Level B work, check out the websites below. Cool stuff!
Level B
Read and take notes p 8-15 in your notebook. Start a new line for each vocab word. DO NOT DO Try This p 15. We will do it in class.
Research abyssal plains, write 3/4-1 typed page or 1 1/2-2 hand written pages summary in your own words, DUE TUESDAY.
Research ocean trenches, write summary DUE FRIDAY 9-16-11
Use websites below for research.
Go to seasky.org website and copy the drawing of the continental shelf and sunlight zones, including depth markers. DUE TUESDAY.
Use seasky.org also to write one paragraph about Bioluminescence, including definition, usage, and 6-8 animals that use this. (choose from the list of animals on right side, there's a link for the word on several) DUE FRIDAY 9-16-11
Print 2 more (different from what you already have) deep sea animals, with name and characteristics DUE FRIDAY 9-16-11
Copy and paste these in your address bar.

SOMETHING FUN/Scroll down for homework

Would parents of my 5-6th grade science class be interested...
Dolphin Tale, the story of the dolphin with a missing flipper comes out Sept. 27th. It could be fun to go watch it as a class if the Plaza has a 4pm show. The whole family is welcome of course, but I could drive 5 kids + myself to the show. (I can't pay for everyone's ticket though sorry). You could pick up your child at the end of the movie.  Let me know if you're interested.

HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY THE 9th

Parents,
what eager students we have! Today we read p1-2, looked over the book, and discussed animal habitats and classification. Although these topics aren't in our lesson, I asked the students to take notes for possible extra credit later on. I handed out Lapbook notebooks, colored composition books. They each wrote their name and lapbook on it to distinguish it from their note taking composition book. The Lapbook will be for the more creative assignments, drawings, pictures, charts, etc.
Please look up p xi for experiment supplies for this lesson. It includes Try This p 7 & 15.
Locate Ocean Box and cover it blue with paint, construction or poster paper. See p 17.
Homework:
Read and take notes on vocabulary, word and definition, p2-8 (in notebook). Sorry kids I gave you the wrong p # in class. Do the Try This p 7 without making a mess. Find pictures of deep sea creatures 3-5 on the internet, print them to bring to class, including the name of the animal and one other bit of information. Google deep sea creatures. Also in the Lapbook, decorate the first white page with "Lesson One", color, draw, get pictures of anything else from Lesson 1. Have fun, go wild, or keep it simple. It's your lapbook. Keep it neat, don't let markers bleed through the page please!
