For Tuesday don't forget the manatee research paper.
Also read and take notes in your notebook p55-57. You should have the following words: herps, herpetology, vertebrates, ectothermic, oviparous, and viviparous which you should remember from Lesson 2. Also define brumation, testudines, carapace, plastron, seutes, and keratin. We will do Try This. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Hopefully you didn't wait to start on the research and won't be overwhelmed defining these 12 words.
Have a great weekend.

HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY TE 28TH

We will have our Lesson 3 test on Friday. Please study.
Anyone still wanting the extra credit must turn in the Science Spec Sheet on Friday.
J.T., Connor, Jacob and Matthew will need to bring their ocean box or tri-fold board presentation on Friday.
As a good review please spend 15 min doing another T-chart comparing/contrasting manatees and dugongs with the information in the book. You do not need to do additional research.
Your lapbooks are due Friday for grading. They should include the 4 or 8 pinnipeds you researched and which I returned today; a T-chart of True Seals vs Eared Seals; a T-chart of Manatees vs Dugongs. You should also have 3 pictures: one True Seal one Eared Seal and one Walrus. Any Manatee/Dugong pictures will earn you additional pts. If you have pictures with your 4-8 pinnipeds you do not need more.
For next Tues 11-1-11
At the end of Lesson 3 p 51 is an assignment For Older Students writing an essay about interaction between humans and manatees. Level A please write 1/2 page (typed) and Level B 1 full page. At least start researching some websites. We can discuss this more in class Friday, or parents call if you have questions.
See you Friday.

HOMEWORK FOR TUES. OCTOBER 25TH

Please finish reading the chapter. I think there are 4-5 more vocab words you need to define. Today in class we made a T-chart to compare/contrast the features of the True Seal and Eared Seal. Because the kids were a bit distracted I'm not sure they got much out of our discussion. So I'm assigning this as homework now.
LEVEL A & B
Read and take notes p 45-50 for Tuesday. Allie and J.T will give their presentations. It must cover 4 animals and you should be able to give 4-5 facts about each one without reading. You may have back up notecards in case you freeze, but try not to use them.
Make the T-chart comparing True and Eared Seals in your LAPBOOKS. I will collect these Friday after the test. You should list 5 facts of each animal. Please call if you need clarification.
have a nice weekend.
****Field trip**** Ms. Nicole is planning a field trip Tuesday after school to Point South by Hwy 95. Be on the lookout for her email. I will not be able to go, so contact her for details.

HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY THE 21ST

Read and take notes p44-47, stopping at Walrus Family. You should have the following words defined Phocidae, Oatriidae, eared seals. This is light work so you should have no trouble completing the research assigned on the last blog, or catching with you definitions if you did not complete what was due today.
OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT
I handed out Scientific Spec Sheets with instructions on specific details and how to relate the conclusion to this lesson. No credit will be given if this is not done well. I also want a picture of the student doing the experiment stapled with the assignment or emailed. This is DUE OCT 28TH. I will not accept it late.
For this lesson's Ocean Box creature, choose one: a True Seal, an Eared Seal, or a Walrus. Make sure you make the distinguishing feature so we can tell what you made. I need 2 eager beavers willing to give their ocean box show & tell presentation on Tues the 25th. The other 3 will give it on the 28th after our test.

HOMEWORK FOR FRIDAY THE 7TH

I was a little disappointed today that no one did the Try This experiment p 32 to be able to discuss it orally. This was clearly mentioned on the previous blog.
Several students need to catch up on work. I haven't been grading the notes/vocab words, but since they aren't always getting done I guess I will have to starting Lesson 3.
The students were interested in whaling, so please find internet sites appropriate to your family's comfort level with this topic.
LEVEL A
Complete your lapbook list of whales, with 4-5 facts/characteristics about each one. You should put Narwhals and Sperm Whales to finish with the Toothed Whales. Then list the Baleen Whales: Blue, Humpback, Gray, and Right. You should have a total of 10 whales with facts and pictures. Glue a picture of each whale type one per page ie glue a dolphin picture on the page listing dolphin characteristics. You can do 3 whales Wed., and 3 more Thur. unless you need to catch up. Be neat! Hand in your lapbooks Friday for a grade.
DO THE TRY THIS EXPERIMENT PAGE 32 AND BE PREPARED TO EXPLAIN IT ORALLY.
Finish reading the lesson to p39 with vocab in your notebooks.
Research history of whaling and if any type is still legally hunted today. Write 1/2 -1 page paper DUE TUESDAY THE 11TH. Don't forget crossword puzzles are due Friday.
LEVEL B
Same as level A, but write a paper about whaling 1- 1 1/2 pages.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK, SEE YOU FRIDAY!

HOMEWORK FOR TUES THE 4TH

We missed Allie and J.T today!
We reviewed the homework notes on Dolphins, Porpoises, Killer Whales, and Beluga Whales. Although I did not tell you specifically to do the "Try This" p 32, I would like you to. It requires a freezer and we cannot do it in class. You don't need to do a write up but be prepared to explain orally what you do.
In class we were able to read and take notes on Narwhals and Sperm Whales.
LEVEL A & B
start on your crossword puzzle - this is DUE FRIDAY OCT 7TH. You should know 1/2 the vocabulary already, so please start on it.
Read and take notes on p33-36. This is not too long to allow Allie and JT to catch up.
***In your Lapbooks***
At the top of a new page put Toothed Whales. Then list the following one per page: dolphins, porpoises, killer whales, and beluga whales. If you want to work ahead you can do Narwhals and Sperm Whales also. Then list characteristics as bullet points so it looks like this
Dolphins
        - playful, intelligent
        - swim in pods or large pods called herds
        - great hunters, hunt in packs
        - they porpoise or make low leaps out of the water
        - most commonly seen, near warmer Atlantic waters
Leave room for a picture downloaded from the internet or a drawing.
The next page should say Toothed Whales, Porpoises with its characteristics. We will have one page per whale type in this lesson. Don't forget nicknames such as Belugas are also called Sea Canaries. These names would make excellent test questions.
Don't forget the Echolocation paragraph due Tuesday. Have a great weekend.
